Electronic Arts (EA) fell victim to a hack that caused the FIFA 21 source code to fall into the hands of hackers, including the Frostbite game engine, which is the basis for a number of EA games such as Battlefield.
Reported by Motherboard, Friday (11/6/2021), EA hackers are reported to have started marketing the data they stole on hacking forums. But they limit the offers accepted for hackers whose names are already well known.
Source code is very valuable data in programming, that’s why leaking the source code of a game, especially a well-known game, will be a very big problem for game companies.
Previously there were also several hacks that stole the source code of big games, such as the source code of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 which was stolen from Projekt Red, then the leaks of many SNES and Nintendo 64 games including Super Mario Kart and the unreleased Zelda games.
Although indeed, if the EA source code is really leaked and sold in cyberspace, it is unlikely that the code will be used by big developers. However, the source code can be used by hackers or crackers to create cheats or cracks in the game.
Or it could be that the source code is used to search for secret projects in it, or simply become a new game idea, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Friday (11/6/2021).
In addition to EA’s source code, the hackers also claimed to have the SDKs and APIs belonging to Microsoft Xbox and Sony, which they also sell on the same forum. In total, they sold 780 GB of stolen data.
EA has also confirmed that there are some source code and some game programming tools that were stolen by hackers. But they promised that no player data was leaked in the hack.
