Xiaomi recently showed off its 200W fast charging technology that can fully charge a 4,000 mAh cell phone in eight minutes. Charging this fast usually has a long-lasting effect on battery quality, but at the time Xiaomi didn’t disclose the potential impact.
Now through a question and answer uploaded on Weibo, Xiaomi explains how the impact of using 200W fast charging technology on the quality of cell phone batteries in the future.
Based on their estimation, the battery will start to lose 20% of its capacity after 800 cycles. This means that the battery capacity will be reduced to 80% after being fully recharged every day for two years.
From these estimates, it can be calculated that the 4,000 mAh battery will reduce its capacity to 3,200 mAh within two years if it continues to be recharged using a 200W charger. Meanwhile, the 5,000 mAh battery will be reduced to 4,000 mAh, as quoted from the Android Authority, Sunday (13/6/2021).
This figure is almost equivalent to the 120W fast charging technology introduced by Oppo last year. At that time Oppo said recharging up to 800 times using a 125W charger would reduce battery capacity to 80%.
Xiaomi claims this statistic is higher than the standard set by Chinese regulators regarding battery degradation, which is the battery capacity is reduced to 60% after 400 cycles.
In addition to answering questions about battery quality, Xiaomi also ensures that this 200W fast charging technology is safe to use. This Chinese vendor said this technology already has 40 security and protection protocols.
Xiaomi first demonstrated this technology using a custom version of the Mi 11 Pro with a 4,000 mAh battery. With 200W HyperCharge technology, this battery can be fully charged in eight minutes.
On the same occasion, Xiaomi also introduced 120W wireless charging technology that can fully charge a 4,000 mAh battery in 15 minutes. It is not yet known whether this technology will be released commercially in the near future and what Xiaomi phones will use it first.
